One important note : your taxi driver may not be familiar with the hotel (yet). In any case, ours wasn’t. After sunset, we were trying to find it, after a smooth landing at Bangkok airport. No problem, just tell him to drive up Soi 11, until you see a big “U” that is lit against a small tower. That’s it.
The U Sukhumvit is all about a boutique-hotel
Spacious and well decorated rooms – a must for that kind of money -, free wireless connection, a beautiful restaurant and a pool on the last floor (you can admire Bangkok while enjoying a cocktail on the rooftop).
Everything is carefully cleaned up all day long and don’t be surprised if they ask you about the time you want to leave the hotel. Your reservation is good for 24 hours, so, if you arrive at 10 pm, you can have a room until 10 pm, on the next day!
As for the service, we have absolutely no objection. A tuk-tuk in the colors of the hotel will take you to Soi 11 (a street close to the hotel, which is a very popular nightlife scene), to the BTS or to Terminal 21 shopping center.
Although the hotel is not close to the lively Sukhumvit, that isn’t a problem for one or two nights. However, if you’re staying longer than that, you’d better look for a hotel that is more centrally located.
Our review of the first room category of the U Sukhumvit
This is the “low-end” option. This spacious room (about 30m²) includes a large office space, a mini-bar, an internet connection, a large bed, a bathroom with a rain-shower and countless toiletries (you can even choose your favorite fragrance when checking in). The TV is connected to the internet, which allows you to surf YouTube or to get information about the hotel and Bangkok, given that the choice of TV channels is rather limited.
The big + of the U Sukhumvit Bangkok:
-
The bedding is crazy. Really comfortable and worthy of a really great hotel.
-
The “whenever wherever” breakfast: served anytime anywhere or in the restaurant between 6:30 am and 11 am.
-
Rooms are available 24/7 (so it doesn’t matter what time your flight arrives)
-
The internet connection is beyond reproach anywhere in the hotel
-
Top service
-
Detailed, meticulous interior design and decor
-
The gym (Technogym equipment)
-
The rooftop pool is really relaxing
-
A real “boutique-hotel” feel: the TV is connected to the internet and there’s a mini-bar, too (1 soft drink free/person/day)
-
Free bike rental
-
Free tuk-tuk in the neighbourhood
-
Excellent quality/price ratio
The hotel downsides
The downsides are minor – we had an excellent 2-night stay and the hotel only opened recently:
-
Breakfast rules are kind of tight. The staff has been trained to cook omelets or to serve coffee a certain way. It is hard to ask for a large coffee pot when the rule is that you only get a small cup, on demand. Apart from that, the buffet is quite complete (given the price): bread, omelets, yogurt, fruit, fruit juice (not freshly squeezed), cakes, cereal, and various types of milk… you won’t die of starvation.
-
The hotel isn’t really located where the action takes place: don’t look for street food or grocery shops within (short) walking distance. You need to take a bike or a tuk-tuk, or to walk for a while. This is not a big deal but it’s still worth mentioning, especially if it’s 40 degrees outside. The end of Soi 11 is 5 minutes away from the hotel.
-
The library (library /business room, on the last floor, close to the pool) is really great for anything but working, because you can hear the music from the bar.
